How to write emails that sell (and don't end up in the trash)
Most commercial emails fail for the same reason: they were written thinking about the company, not about the person receiving them. Your customer didn't wake up thinking about your promotion. They're busy. And they decide in two seconds whether to read you or delete you.
Here's the structure that does work, part by part.
The subject: your only chance
If the subject fails, nothing else matters. The email never gets opened.
What doesn't work
❌ "UNMISSABLE PROMO!!! 50% OFF TODAY ONLY"
Capital letters, repeated punctuation, and fake urgency. This triggers spam filters and breeds distrust.
What does work
✅ "Your usual order, this week at 20% off"
Concrete, personal, no shouting. A good subject is short (under 50 characters), specific, and honest about what's inside.
Fact: subjects generated with artificial intelligence increase open rates by up to 26%, because they test angles you wouldn't consider on your own.
The first line: don't waste it
Many emails start with "We hope you're doing well". That says nothing and takes up the most valuable space.
Your first line should do one of these three things: name a real problem, give concrete news, or ask a question that matters to them.
❌ "Dear customer, we hope this message finds you well. We are pleased to inform you that..."
✅ "You're running out of stock right when you sell the most. I have a proposal for you."
The body: one email, one idea
The classic mistake is cramming five promotions, three updates, and a birthday greeting into the same email. The result is that they act on none of them.
Simple rules for the body:
- One goal per email. If you want them to buy, everything should push toward that.
- Talk about benefits, not features. Don't say "we have 40 templates". Say "your email looks professional in two minutes".
- Short paragraphs. Two or three lines max. On a phone, a long block looks like a wall.
- Write the way you talk. If you wouldn't say it in person, don't write it.
The closing: ask for one thing only
If at the end you give three options (buy, reply, follow us, visit the site), they'll do none. Confusion kills action.
End with a single clear instruction: "Reply to this email and I'll set yours aside" or "Tap here to see the catalog". Direct, specific, easy.
The details that avoid spam
An email can be perfectly written and still not arrive. These elements are mandatory:
- An unsubscribe link visible and one click away.
- The sender's physical address in the footer.
- A recognizable sender: they should see your business name, not a strange address.
- No purchased lists. If people didn't give you permission, they'll report you, and that's the end of your reputation.
A complete example
Subject: Your size is back in stock (6 left)
Hi Ana,
The model you were looking for is back in your size. There are 6 units left and they tend to go fast.
I'll set one aside for you until Friday if you reply to this email.
